据《赞美诗（新编）史话》记载，该诗由英国近代圣乐之父瓦茨所写，原来是配以霍斯所写的曲谱《RICHMOND》，虽然也有快乐感恩的情绪，但比起由1830年梅森以伟大作曲家亨德尔名作《弥赛亚》中所改编的乐曲，就显得欢畅的程度不够高涨了。
